Introduction

Registration for Spring 2024 classes will occur November 1-15, which makes October an important month for planning your future academic path. This assignment is intended to help you prepare for Spring registration and afterwards by helping you gain exposure to a major and getting you to think about which courses you might want to take in the spring.

\(~\)

Part 1 - Getting acquainted with a major

It’s totally acceptable and normal for a student in their first semester of college to not yet know what you ultimately want to major in, but at this point you should have at least one possible major in mind that you can look into in greater depth.

For the first part of this assignment, you will get acquainted with one or more majors/concentrations at Grinnell by fulfilling one of the following two options:

Option #1 - Welcome Sessions:

Each department (and some concentrations) will host a welcome session for interested first and second year students. A schedule of these sessions can be found below:

To fulfill this option, attend one of these welcome sessions and write a 3-4 sentence summary/reflection of the experience.

\(~\)

Option #2 - Webpages:

Each major and concentration have their own webpage. A list of these pages can be found below:

To fulfill this option, select two majors or concentrations that seem interesting to you, and for each of them write a 3-4 sentence summary/reflection of what you learned from their webpages. Your summaries should each include one direct quote, and you may attribute this quote using any reasonable citation conventions.

\(~\)

Part 2 - Thinking about Spring 2024

Using the Search for Courses and Course Sections Tool, come up with the following:

  1. Names of the four courses you’d most like to take (ie: STA-209 Applied Statistics or ECN-233 International Economics)
  2. Names of three alternate courses you might select if you are unable to get into some of your top choices.

For each of seven courses you identified, write 1-2 sentences explaining how the course aligns with your academic goals and contributes to a balanced liberal arts education.

\(~\)

Part 3 - Thinking beyond Spring 2024

Looking at the courses offered in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024, come up with the following:

  1. Names of two courses you’d most like to take at some point in your time at Grinnell
  2. The list of pre-reqs for each course you identified.

A 1-2 sentence reflection on why you want to take each course, keeping in mind what you might see yourself doing after Grinnell.

Misc

  • If you have any interest in Phi Beta Kappa, “a national honorary society devoted to the cultivation of the intellect and to the union of those engaged in intellectual pursuits”, you should review the induction requirements and consider them in your plans, as fulfilling the requirements is easiest if you start early.
